Welcome and introduction
Welcome to In Our Own Words. This art project invites you to be cultural explorers.
Your mission: languages.
Melbourne has a vibrant and rich culture, with many many languages spoken by diverse communities. Do you know people who speak languages that you don’t understand? This project will take a playful approach to discovering and understanding words that are currently alive in Melbourne homes, and sharing them with others.
If you’re a child aged 7 to 11, we want to hear from you about the languages that are spoken by your parents, grandparents, neighbours or family friends. We want you to talk to the people in your life who speak another language, working together to find three words you like. Those words will be transformed into artwork, and this website will be soon become a visual and sound gallery of all the words you collect!
This cultural mission can be done either in person or via video chat. Explorers will meet with the artist via video.
